Branding Mistakes That Could Be Hurting Your Business

Graphic Designers Spotting Images

Branding isn’t just about looking good, it’s about being remembered, trusted and understood. But even the best-intentioned businesses can stumble when it comes to maintaining a strong, consistent identity.

And the problem? These mistakes don’t always announce themselves with flashing lights. More often, they quietly chip away at your credibility without you even realising.

Here are three of the most common (and costly) branding missteps we see:

1. Inconsistency

This is the big one!

If your logo looks one way on your website, another on social media and a third on your printed flyers...you're sending mixed signals. The same goes for fonts, colours and tone of voice.

To your audience, inconsistency feels like uncertainty. And when people sense uncertainty, they hesitate. Trust starts to slip. Recognition gets diluted. That ‘professional’ first impression? Undone by a wobbly visual identity.

Consistency isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about building confidence. A brand that shows up the same way, every time, makes people feel they know what to expect.

Why it works: emotion, perception and trust

Let’s break it down:

  • Colour triggers emotion. Blue feels calm and trustworthy. Red feels bold and energised. Green (yes, like Lime!) suggests growth and freshness. These aren’t random choices, they’re psychological cues.

  • Fonts shape perception. Serif fonts can suggest tradition and authority. Rounded sans serifs might feel friendly and modern. Your choice of typography silently tells people what kind of experience to expect from your business.

  • Tone of voice builds connection. Whether you’re chatty and informal or polished and expert, how you sound is just as important as how you look. Your words reinforce your values.

All of this adds up to a feeling. That feeling influences whether someone trusts you, buys from you and/or remembers you later.

The magic ingredient? Consistency

Even the strongest identity will fall flat if it’s not used consistently.

Imagine Imagine if Nike suddenly swapped it's sleek ‘Just Do It’ messaging for something like ‘Give It a Go, Maybe?’ or if McDonald’s randomly changed their yellow arches to purple one week. It would feel…off. That’s because consistency builds recognition and recognition builds trust.

Inconsistent branding, on the other hand, creates doubt. If your social media looks different from your website and your printed materials use a different tone or colour scheme, it sends mixed messages - and mixed messages lead to confusion, not confidence.

A final thought…

If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly tweaking your brand, trying a new tone here, testing a new font there...you’re not alone! It’s easy to second-guess yourself, especially when inspiration is everywhere.

But great branding isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being consistent, intentional and true to your values. Small shifts in the right direction can have a big impact.

And the first step? Knowing what to look out for...
